You lose weight, it sneaks back on again and each time you try to lose it, it get's more and more challenging...
Or
You lose some weight but hit a plateau, so you have to cut back even more to continue losing. But then you hit another plateau...
What do these two scenarios have in common?
Metabolic downregulation aka, sluggish metabolism. Here's 5 reason we develop a sluggish metabolism:
You're cutting back too much for too long. Consistent lack of fuel = eventual starvation, so your clever body adapts by burning fewer calories
Too much cardio and not enough strength training. Cardio is great for your heart and definitely has a place in a health lifestyle, but too much can drive up stress hormones, which causes muscle breakdown. Muscle is metabolically active (it burns calories), so loss of muslce = decrease in metabolism.
Not eating enough fat and protein. Protein is need to support muscle health and stable blood sugars (and lot more) and fat is need for our cells to communicate properly. Cellular and muscle damage = sluggish metabolism
Having less that 7 hours sleep consistently. Sleep is when we repair, rebalance hormones and rebuild muscle. Lack of sleep = metabolic damage.
We're exposed to toxins constently and many of them are know as obesogens, because they disrupt fat burning and hormones. Not taking steps to reduce exposure or improve detoxification prevent metabolic repair.
